Merciful King

Merciful Lord,
hands that hammered nails,
made cupboards, chairs and
tables,
carried a crossbeam
or crucifix
far heavier than anything you’d
ever made, or moved before.
you grit your teeth and broke
your back, remembering me,
and the cost I couldn’t meet.
blameless Christ I’ll take my cross,
not for the sinner’s ransom paid for me—
for you, my God and Majesty—
for you good shepherd,
merciful priest and king.
